Dear Friend,

Thank you for your recent inquiry about Vipassana meditation courses being held at the California Vipassana Center. The courses will be conducted by Assistant Teachers appointed by S.N. Goenka of the Vipassana International Academy, Igatpuri, India. Tapes of Mr. Goenka's discourses and instructions will be used.

Vipassana is a simple technique of purification of the mind. By practicing it, one learns to develop mental balance and harmony. This enables one to lead a more happy, productive and useful life.

In order to learn this technique, it is necessary to attend a complete ten-day course. During the ten days, a student learns first to develop increased concentration. This heightened concentration is then used as a means to examine one's own mental and physical nature. By doing so, a student gains the insight and detachment necessary to free oneself from unwholesome qualities such as greed, anger, and fear. As these unwholesome qualities are weakened and then eliminated, the latent wholesome qualities of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, begin to develop. A ten-day course provides a mental training of profound and practical value in everyday life.

The courses in this tradition are financed solely on a donation basis. However, donations are accepted only from old students, that is, those who have completed at least one ten-day course with Mr. Goenka or one of his Assistant Teachers. Having experienced the benefits of Vipassana, students then donate towards the expenses of others. At the end of the course you will become an old student and are then free to give a donation according to your volition and capacity.

These donations are the only means of financing these courses around the world. The courses are not sponsored by any wealthy individual or foundation. Neither the teachers nor organizers nor servers profit in any material way from their service. In this way, the spread of Vipassana is carried out with purity of purpose, free from any commercialism.

Enclosed with this letter is a course schedule, a code of discipline and an application form. Please read the code of discipline carefully. If you would like to attend a course, please fill out the form, return it to the above address, and await confirmation that there is space for you in the course.

Courses are often full to capacity and you are advised to apply as early as possible. If, after sending in your application form, you find that you are unable to attend, please let us know so that your place may be given to another.

Sincerely,

The Registration Committee
