This cross-sectional micrograph illustrates the retinal layers at the fovea. Most cones lie in the fovea, whereas peripheral vision is dominated by rods. Overall, rods greatly outnumber cones. Rods are for black and white vision and are very sensitive to low light. Cones are for color vision and not as sensitive to dim light.
